HEY GUYS, CHECK THIS OUT:

So I did artwork for the St. Louis Small Press Expo! They’re running a kickstarter right now to get funds to run it effectively, and if you pledge over $20, you get a screenprinted tote with this artwork on it!

It’s an amazing event. And this year it’ll be held at the library I work at, as well! Consider donating!

Yes! We are running a Kickstarter to offer table scholarships and expand into programming for this year’s show. steenzartblog did the artwork for SPEx 2015. You can get a tote featuring the art and more by backing the Kickstarter!

Earlier this month, silverhandpress released the first issue of my comic Underworld Adventure. We had a release event at a local Saint Louis microbrewery/bar Earthbound Beer (yes, named after the SNES classic). I have been dreaming for years about having an event where multiple games played through a dungeon inspired by a work released at the same event. Earthbound has a weekly D&D night. This seemed like perfect moment to try it.

Because I didn’t have enough to do with finishing the comic or getting ready to table at the chicagozinefest, I decided to do more than just do a simple DCCRPG adaption the dungeon featured in my comic but to create art intensive resources to aid in running the game as well. On top of dungeon notes and a simple map; I made cards with images and stats for monsters, hirelings, special items, and familiars to be used at the table. Due to juggling too many things at once and being crunched for time, these play aids met with mixed results. The design and type definitely became increasingly messy, hard to read, and devoid of style as the work became rushed. At the same time, the cards really worked for their intended purposes. It made handing new things off to players a breeeze. The cards for the hordes of Ratters and Homunculi where real stand outs. They killed their design goals by allowing for easy on-the-fly random customization and organization of large groups of creatures.

The actual games run by restaurantquality and I met with better results. We ended up with six players per table (with mix of ranging from dedicated players from my weekly game to ones with no tabletop experience). Neither @restaurantquality nor I had any experience with public games but both of us kind of found that we loved it. So did the players. Both groups had a blast exploring the dungeon for about two hours, surprisingly ending about the same place on the map. An incredible amount of things were accomplished in that time: some old school dungeon exploration was done, many stat points were spell burned, monsters were negotiated with, riddles were solved, and more than a few enemies were defeated.

Afterwards, restaurantquality voiced interest in getting folks together to complete the adventure some time. He also expressed surprise at how much he liked the bundle of materials I handed off to him to Judge his group (His first thought being, if I wanted cards then I would be playing something else). The combination of public play and dungeon kit seemed to be a winning one. It was an inspiring experience and one that I am not quite sure where it will take me.
